The San Juan River is well known by flyfisherman
as one of the, if not THE, premier tailwater fisheries
in the entire Southwest, (if not the entire U.S.)!
Rizuto’s Lodge is the closest lodging establishment
to this famed river. Located in Navajo Dam, New
Mexico, the Lodge is approximately a one-hour
drive from Durango, Colorado, and a 45-minute
drive from Farmington, New Mexico.
Chuck Rizuto, owner and proprietor, commands
a stellar reputation in the flyfishing community.
He holds the world record for the most species
of fish caught with a flyrod. He is currently
heavily involved, and top rated, in the Pro Bass
fishing tournament world. Mr. Rizuto has owned
the San Juan River Lodge for many years and has
accommodated many famous guests, including, but
not limited to, Lorie Morgan, Kevin Kostner and
Sammy Hagar.
The Lodge is discreetly located off the main
highway and boasts 8 large, immaculate rooms,
each with various bed configurations. Each room
is equipped with a full bath w/x-large shower,
comfortable beds, rod & wader hangars, and flytying
tables. The owner’s residence lies adjacent to
the motel quarters. San Juan River Lodge has a
well-equipped flyshop and an adjoining recreation
room with pool table and television w/VCR. Rizuto’s
is able to provide continental breakfasts for
groups, and arrangements can be made for catered
dinner parties.
Due to his long history in the area, Chuck Rizuto
has established excellent relationships with all
the local guides, who work for him on an “as needed”
basis, in addition to his regular guides. All
are well versed in the tricks, tactics and safety
apropos to this tremendous, cold, and fast-flowing
River.
The San Juan River flows out of Navajo Dam Lake,
and the 4.25 miles of quality “catch & release”
water below the Dam hold over 80,000 trout. Average
size of these fish is 17”, but fish well over
20” are abundant. This quality water is fished
with tiny flies, fine tippet and proper presentation.
